About Washington Township

The Story of Washington Township

Washington Township, located in northwestern York County, is a predominantly rural and agricultural community. Unlike neighboring areas, it has retained its wide-open spaces, productive farmland, and traditional character due to its relative isolation from major development pressures. However, increasing suburban expansion from nearby cities poses challenges to preserving its scenic landscapes and farmland.

To manage growth responsibly, Washington Township has actively planned for the future. Since the 1970s, the Township has worked with the York County Planning Commission to develop and update its Comprehensive Plan, ensuring development enhances rather than detracts from the community’s quality of life. 

IMPORTANT INFORMATION IN Washington Township

On February 16, 2026, the Board of Supervisors opened bids from four different contractors. The awarded bid went to Anthracite Waste Services LLC. The contract year will begin on June 1, 2026. The cost for the first year will be $381.00 or $95.25 per quarter. The second-year cost will be $388.00 per year, and the third-year cost will be $396.00 per year. This price is for a 96-gallon cart for trash and a 64-gallon cart for recycling, which will be provided. It also allows for one (1) bulk item pick-up per week.

Residents who have a binding contract with a waste collector will have up to one year to terminate that contract. ALL residents wishing to have trash collection in Washington Township will only be allowed to use Anthracite for the next three years.


  

In order to provide Anthracite with a list of residents wanting trash pickup, we are asking you to provide the Township with the following information by April 30th. All invoices for trash will go directly to the residents from Anthracite. Please print all information.
